You can configure their behaviors in their character sheet. Just click the character (so you control it), then press (default C) and switch to the behavior tabs. A mage should probably be on "overkill spellcasting" mode...

First of all, download this, and never remove it: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=NW ... ail&id=141

"Overkill" tends to be... well, overkill. Besides, that also controls item usage (though you can deactivate it IIRC), so you might find yourself quickly running out of potions, scrolls, etc., instead of saving them for bosses and such. I tend to stick with "scaled" with my offensive casters (aside from warlocks), or just deactivate spellcasting altogether if I want more control.

Anyway, if your mage isn't casting a spell, nor using a ranged weapon, he'll attack with his staff. With Tony K's AI (what I linked above), you can set a character to not attack in melee, flee when attacked, and choose the distance at which he'll switch melee/ranged weapons. It's not perfect, but it should help with your issues. And yes, swords tend to be better at killing stuff than lutes.

I sure hope you picked up a good FAQ.

FAQs are often put together by people who have no clue.

Did they recommend you do strength-, dexterity-, or charisma-based?

Don't ever follow a Gamefaqs FAQ. They don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

OK,
looks like I'm going to start again (have not played too long, still just in the main village).
Going to go for one of these two builds: http://nwn2db.com/build/?83768 or http://nwn2db.com/build/?124983

...except for the MotB guides by randsome1. They're pretty good (though somewhat outdated).

Both those builds will work. Although both could be better ...

- On balance it's better to get Legionnaire's March than hitting 16BAB.

- All builds are better with a little dipping so the pure bard misses advantages.

I quickly threw this one together that you might want to consider. It's like the one Ark linked to earlier (B18/R1/F1) but it takes a ranger level instead of fighter to gain an improved favored enemy: undead feat.

Anyway, any of these builds that have been linked in this thread would work so don't stress too much. Pick one and go forth with confidence.

Yeah, I've been mainly using his guide as far as comprehensive guides are concerned. But as you say, it's a bit out-dated and doesn't incorporate Kaedrin's content (or even the SoZ content, I believe).
